The majestic and imposing capital city of Malta. It holds remarkable architecture with some of the best sea views you will find in the country. With historical museums and landmarks, the city is engulfed in wonderful culture. One of the places that you definitely need to visit when in Valletta is the Co-Cathedral of Saint John, consisting of priceless Caravaggio paintings and gold. When in Valletta, you should also visit the Manoel Theatre, one of the oldest in Europe, which hosts marvellous theatrical productions. After enjoying all the beautiful landmarks and historical places that Valletta has to offer, you can indulge in delightful cuisine and shopping within the various restaurants and shops. Two places where you can run wild are Republic Street and Merchant Street.
If you are already in Valletta, it is quite easy to get to the Three Cities, in an enjoyable way. This can be done by visiting the Upper Barrakka Garden in Valletta, taking the panoramic elevator and going down. Once you cross the street and proceed to the left, you can catch the boat which will take you to Birgu. The Three Cities’ beauty can be enjoyed by a stroll through the various streets. Some popular landmarks include Fort St. Angelo, the Inquisitor’s Palace and the Malta Maritime Museum found within Birgu. In Senglea, you can appreciate an impeccable view of Valletta from the Safe Haven Gardens. For leisure and entertainment, you can indulge in the various options at the Birgu waterfront.
Gozo is accessible via ferry and is a few minutes away from Malta. It is synonymous with relaxation, and a more tranquil lifestyle when compared to Malta. With various green spots and farmhouses holding character developed over the years, Gozo is definitely a place to experience every now and again. There is a number of places to visit including Marsalforn, Ggantija Temples and Rabat amongst others. One of the landmarks that can be appreciated in Rabat is the Cittadella, which used to serve as a refuge for the people of Gozo during the medieval period.
An interesting spot, especially during the hot summer months. This is found in Comino which is a very small island between Malta and Gozo. Considering its size, Comino holds quite a reputation. During the summer months, the Blue Lagoon is typically filled with swimming tourists, enjoying the clear water. The Blue Lagoon is unlike anything you will see in Malta or Gozo however it is important to keep in mind that it is not the place for a quiet beach day, unless of course you visit during the colder winter months.
Apart from being one of the most aesthetically pleasing locations within Malta, Mdina holds historical significance. It was the former capital of Malta and was referred to as the noble city. Being renowned as the “Silent City” it is appreciated by many from all over the world due to its impeccable charm and streets filled with character. In the Middle Ages, authorities such as government would be set up there. One of the landmarks within Mdina is St. Paul’s Cathedral. Its baroque features can be highly appreciated, especially in this day and age.
Marsaxlokk is ideal to visit on a Sunday, the day when one can enjoy the fish market. Although the market is predominantly known for fish, one can still find several items to buy including clothes and souvenirs. The market is well-frequented, with many making their way to this popular location. The seaside is typically filled with traditional Luzzu boats, creating a delightful ambience. Marsaxlokk is also home to some of the finest restaurants in Malta, specialising in exquisite fish dishes.
The Blue Grotto which is located in the southern part of Malta attracts thousands of tourists on a yearly basis. On sunny days, it is truly a spectacle to admire due to the light reflections. The spot is popular for snorkelling and diving, with the water being clean and clear. The Blue Grotto features in the movie Troy which starred Brad Pitt. Although one should not miss a visit to the Blue Grotto, you should be warned that it can get busy at times, which is why going there early in the morning might be best.
Malta is home to a number of megalithic temples which can be found across several locations within the country. Some of these temples have been earmarked as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These temples were built between the fourth and third century BCE. Temples within Malta may be visited in Tarxien, Hagar Qim, Qrendi and Ggantija in Gozo. Their historical significance is backed by the fact that they are some of the earliest free-standing stone buildings. These masterpieces are some of the few remnants still available to us which go back to the prehistoric period.
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is an outstanding underground burial complex that bears testimony to a civilization that has disappeared. It was in use between 4000 BC and 1500 BC. Covering a remarkable 500 square metres, it was among the first Maltese entries on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Ġgantija Megalithic site.
